Die Sirenen singen – schön, schreibt Homer. Sie sitzen auf einer Insel, locken die Männer an Land und töten sie. Bis auf Orpheus, der lauter singt, und Odysseus, dessen Gefährten sich Wachs in die Ohren stopfen und ihn an den Schiffsmast fesseln lassen, damit er den Sirenen lauschen kann, ohne zu sterben.
In den europäischen Mythen herrscht Gewalt: zwischen Menschen, Göttern, Fabelwesen und den Geschlechtern. Ungleichheit und Machtgefälle produzieren Ängste und Verteidigungsstrategien anstelle von Beziehungen. Was lässt uns immer noch festhalten an diesen Verhältnissen?

Zusammen mit ihren Kollaborateurinnen platziert Regisseurin Laura Kutkaitė mitten in das Minenfeld des Mythos eine aktuelle Geschichte: Vier Jahre nach dem Höhepunkt der #MeToo-Bewegung in Litauen holt sie das Thema des Machtmissbrauchs im Kunstbetrieb auf die Bühne. Auf einem Felsen posierend eröffnen vier Schauspielerinnen ihr Inseltheater und erzählen, in Erwartung „des großen Odysseus“, wahre Geschichten aus ihrer Arbeitswelt. Dabei lassen sie keinen Abgrund aus – auch nicht die Konkurrenz untereinander – und spielen zugleich Theater: in Kostüm und Maske, mit Sound und Licht, mit galligem Humor, Lust, Verletzlichkeit und ausreichend Gründen. So treffen sie die Verhältnisse genau dort, wo sie sich auch ändern können.

European mythology is dominated by violence: between people, gods, mythical creatures and the sexes. Inequality and power imbalances produce fears and defence strategies instead of relationships. What makes us hold on to these structures?

Working with her collaborators, director Laura Kutkaitė puts a contemporary story right in the middle of the mine field of myth: four years after the highpoint of the #MeToo movement in Lithuania, she puts the issue of abuse of power in the arts world on the stage. Posing on a rock, four female actors open their island theatre and tell true stories from their working life, while waiting for “the great Odysseus”. They leave no dark detail out – not even the competition between them – and at the same time perform theatre: in costume and makeup, with sound and light, with bitter humour, passion, vulnerability and plenty of reasons. In this way they strike the structures exactly where they could change.

Laura Kutkaitė, *1993, studierte Choreografie und Philosophie, ehe sie an der Litauischen Akademie für Musik und Theater das Regiestudium aufnahm, das sie 2021 mit einer Inszenierung von Sarah Kanes PHÄDRAS LIEBE abschloss. DAS SCHWEIGEN DER SIRENEN entstand als erste Arbeit nach dem Studium im Rahmen des Programms für junge Künstler*innen am Litauischen Nationaltheaters Vilnius und eröffnete dort im Juni 2022 die neue Studiobühne.
Laura Kutkaitė, *1993, studied choreography and philosophy before starting to study directing at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, where she graduated in 2021 with a production of Sarah Kane’s PHAEDRA’S LOVE. THE SILENCE OF THE SIRENS is her first work after graduation as part of the Young Creators Programme at the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre in Vilnius and opened the new studio stage there in June 2022.
