Die amerikanische Rock- und Bluesmusikerin Janis Joplin gehört zu der Generation, die in den 1960er Jahren die Normen und klassischen Rollenmodelle der westlichen Welt aufmischt. Es ist die Zeit der Bürgerrechtsbewegungen, der Einforderung demokratischer Werte und Rechte für alle und des Aufbegehrens gegen ein kaum veränderungs- aber umso kriegswilligeres politisches Establishment. Die Popgeschichte zählt Joplin, die 1970 mit 27 Jahren stirbt, wie Jimi Hendrix oder Jim Morrison zur „Live fast, love hard, die young“-Generation: durch den frühen Tod zum Mythos und in ihrer Musik unsterblich geworden. Ende der Geschichte?
Was interessiert eine junge serbische Regisseurin, eine Autorin und ein Schauspiel-Ensemble heute an Joplin, geboren 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas? Was finden sie im poetischen und biografischen Kosmos dieser Ausnahme-Sängerin, in ihrer Haltung und ihrem Lebensgefühl, dem Joplin eine Stimme geben konnte wie vielleicht niemand sonst? Und warum die Frage nach ihrem Tod?
Sonja Petrovićs Inszenierung schlägt eine Brücke vom Mythos zurück zu seinem Ausgangspunkt. Sie feiert mit Joplins Musik die Party ihres Lebens und erzählt zugleich die Geschichte der Frau diesseits der Legende: eine Geschichte von jemandem, der nicht der herrschenden Norm folgt.

The American rock and blues musician Janis Joplin belongs to the generation that shook up the norms and traditional role models of the Western world in the 1960s. It was the time of the civil rights movement, demands for democratic values and rights for all and revolt against a political establishment that was hardly willing to change, but certainly willing to wage war. Pop history includes Joplin, who died in 1970 at 27, like Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison, in the “live fast, love hard, die young” generation: mythologised by her early death and immortalised in her music. End of story?
Why would a young Serbian director, a writer and an acting ensemble be interested in Joplin today, born in 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas? What do they find in this exceptional singer’s poetic and biographical cosmos, in her attitude and feeling for life, which Joplin was able to give a voice to like maybe no one else? And why the question about her death?
Sonja Petrović’s production creates a link between the myth and its starting point. With Joplin’s music, she celebrates the party of her life and at the same time tells the story of the woman behind the legend: the story of someone who did not follow the prevailing norm.

Sonja Petrović, *1990, studierte Regie an den Theaterakademien in Novi Sad (Bachelor) und Belgrad (Master). WHO KILLED JANIS JOPLIN? entstand 2020 in Zusammenarbeit mit der Europäischen Jugendhauptstadt Novi Sad 2019 und dem Serbischen Nationaltheater in Novi Sad als ihre dritte professionelle Regiearbeit. In ihrer Heimatstadt Bačka Palanka leitet sie außerdem ein Festival für ökologisches Theater für Kinder und Jugendliche.
