53 Fans des nordfranzösischen Fußballclubs RC Lens erobern die Bühne – mit Maskottchen, Frittenbude und Pompom-Girls. In Frankreich ist dieser Fanclub legendär: Auch wenn der Club „nur“ in der zweiten Liga spielt, gelten seine Fans als „das beste Publikum Frankreichs“. Lens liegt in einer ehemaligen Kohle- und Stahlregion, die einen tiefgreifenden Strukturwandel hinter sich hat und heute von Armut, Arbeitslosigkeit und nationalistischen Tendenzen geprägt ist. El Khatib hat sich über ein Jahr Zeit genommen für die Recherche im Bollaert-Delelis, dem clubeigenen Stadion des Zweitligisten, bevor er diese dokumentarische Performance entwickelte. Eingebettet in Erzählungen über die Liebe zum Club, greift er die persönlichen Themen der Darsteller*innen ebenso wie die politischen Themen der Region auf. Er schaut mit den Augen eines Anthropologen auf den Mythos der Arbeiter*innenklasse und das Verhalten in der Fankurve. STADIUM macht die Faszination der 90-minütigen Zeremonie im Stadion auch im Theaterraum sicht- und fühlbar. Welche Leidenschaft animiert die Körper, die gesamte Dauer eines Spiels in die gleiche Richtung zu schauen? Oder anders gefragt: „Was ist der wesentliche Unterschied zwischen dem Publikum eines Theaters und dem eines Fußballspiels? Ich meine, neben der Art, sich zu kleiden?“ (Gilles Deleuze)

2008 wurde das Collectif Zirlib gegründet, dessen Prämissen lauten: „Ästhetik ist nie frei von politischer Bedeutung“ und „Mitspielen ist die beste Form, sich Theater anzueignen“. Daher stehen in ihren Produktionen regelmäßig nicht-professionelle Darsteller*innen mit ihren Geschichten auf der Bühne.

53 fans of the northern French soccer club RC Lens conquer the stage – with mascots, french fries and cheerleaders. This fan club is legendary in France: Even if the club ‘only’ plays in the second league, its fans are regarded as ‘the best audience in France.’ Lens is located in a former coal and steel region that has undergone profound structural change and is now characterized by poverty, unemployment, and nationalist tendencies. Mohamed El Khatib researched the Bollaert-Delelis, the club’s own stadium, for over a year before developing this documentary performance. Embedded in stories about the love for the club, he addresses performers’ personal matters as well as political issues in the region. He adopts the gaze of an anthropologist to examine the myth of the working class as well as the behaviour in the stadium. STADIUM renders the fascination with the 90-minute ceremony that takes place in the stadium visible and tangible in the theatre space. What passion animates the bodies to look in the same direction for the entire duration of a game? In other words, what is ‘the essential difference between a theatre audience and that of a football match? I mean, besides the way of dressing?’ (Gilles Deleuze)

In 2008, Mohamed El Khatib founded the Collectif Zirlib, together with the sculptor Frédéric Hocké and the musician Nicolas Jorio, as well as others. They assert, ‘Aesthetics are never free from political significance,’ and ‘Participation is the best way to achieve theatre.’ Hence, their productions regularly feature non-professional performers on stage with their stories.
