Ausgehend von Biografie und Werk der Musiklegende Patti Smith, erzählt HORSES zunächst eine kompromisslose Liebesgeschichte, die zwei Seelenverwandte in einer tiefen Freundschaft lebenslang bindet. Als Smith und Robert Mapplethorpe sich 1967 kennenlernen, sind sie 20 Jahre alt, völlig mittellos und auf der Suche nach einem freien Leben in New York. Bevor sie zu einer der stilprägendsten Künstlerinnen der Rockmusik und er ein Fotograf von Weltruhm wurden, war ihr Leben eine Suche nach Freiheit von Konventionen.
So führt Tom Müllers Studienprojekt, inspiriert von Patti Smiths Erinnerungsbuch JUST KIDS, direkt in eine Epoche, in der der Kampf um Utopien Teil der eigenen Lebensrealität war. Dabei scheut die Inszenierung nicht das Pathos jener Art Liebes- und Lebensversprechen, die sich über einen pragmatischen Realitätssinn vehement hinwegsetzen. Beide Schauspieler lassen sich intensiv auf zwei Künstlerbiografien ein, die über eine „Love Story“ hinaus kulturhistorische Aus-blicke auf einen Kunst- und Lebensentwurf geben.
Tom Müller, 1991 in Plauen geboren, studierte Musikwissenschaft und Amerikanistik in Berlin und Riverside, Kalifornien, bevor er 2015 sein Regiestudium am Mozarteum in Salzburg aufnahm. Neben seinen Regieprojekten arbeitet er als Videokünstler, Bühnenbildner und Musiker (u. a. als Drunken Angel und als Theatermusiker, zuletzt am Residenztheater in München für GLORIA in der Regie von Amélie Niermeyer).


On the basis of the biography and work of music legend Patti Smith, HORSES tells the uncompromising love story that connects two soul mates in a deep, lifelong friendship. When Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe meet in 1967, they are 20 years old, completely destitute, and on a search for a free life in New York. Before she became one of the most formative artists of rock music and he a world famous photographer, their life was a search for freedom from conventions.
In this way, Tom Müller’s study project, inspired by Patti Smith’s memoir JUST KIDS, leads directly into an era in which the fight for utopia was part of everyday reality. At the same time, the production does not shy away from the pathos of the promises of life and love that vehemently overrule a pragmatic sense of reality. Both actors engage intensively with the two artist biographies, which provide – beyond a love story – a cultural and historical perspective on an artistic and life design.
Tom Müller, born 1991 in Plauen, studied Musicology and American Studies in Berlin and Riverside, California, before beginning his study of direction in 2015 at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Alongside his directing projects, he works as a video artist, set designer, and musician (e. g. as Drunken Angel and as a theater musician, recently at Residenztheater Munich for GLORIA, directed by Amélie Niermeyer).
