EL CANDIDATO stellt man sich am besten so vor: Man nimmt ein paar Figuren aus Shakespeares Königsdramen und überträgt sie als Spielsteine auf ein Brett. Dann bildet man vier Mannschaften und platziert sie in die vier Ecken des Spielbretts. Jede Mannschaft wird von zwei Spieler*innen bewegt. Da wir natürlich nicht mehr zu Shakespeares Zeit leben, vertreten die Mannschaften eine der heute existierenden politischen Parteien: Und dann geht es um die Macht. Die muss erobert, verhandelt, erhalten werden – mit allen zur Verfügung stehenden Mitteln.
Mit EL CANDIDATO lädt Marc Villanueva Mir das Publikum ein, selbst als Spieler*innen in das politische Feld einzutauchen und dessen Mechanismen und tödliche Dynamik zu erforschen. Während man diskutiert, zaudert und versucht, die Situation zu verstehen, verstärken Licht, Video- und Soundeinspielungen, die auf die Spielzüge reagieren, unaufhaltsam den Sog der Ereignisse. Und immer geht es darum, am Ball zu bleiben und die Gegner zu vernichten.

EL CANDIDATO is best introduced like this: you take a few characters from Shakespeare’s histories and turn them into figures on a game board. Then you make four teams and place them on the four corners of the board. Each team is moved by two players. Since we don’t live in Shakespeare’s time anymore, the teams represent one of the political parties that exist today: then it’s a struggle for power. Which must be seized, negotiated and maintained – with any means available.
With EL CANDIDATO, Marc Villanueva Mir invites the audience to dive into politics themselves as players and to explore its mechanisms and deadly dynamics. While you’re discussing, wavering and trying to understand the situation, light, video and sound effects reacting to the moves in the game constantly intensify the maelstrom of events. The aim is to stay on the ball at all times and defeat your opponents.

Für seinen Masterabschluss am Institut für Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft der Universität Gießen hat Villanueva Mir ein Spiel weiterentwickelt, das als DJAMBI oder MACHIAVELLIS SCHACHBRETT 1968 in Frankreich veröffentlicht wurde. Villanueva Mir (*1992) studierte außerdem Regie und Dramaturgie am Theaterinstitut in Barcelona und Literaturtheorie und vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft an der Universität Barcelona. In seinen Arbeiten beschäftigt er sich mit ethischen Problemen in der Darstellung politischer Prozesse, mit der Praxis von Diskursen und den Beziehungen zwischen Wissen und Macht.
For his final master’s degree project at the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies at the University of Giessen, Villanueva Mir further developed a game that was released as DJAMBI or MACHIAVELLIS SCHACHBRETT in France in 1968. Villanueva Mir (*1992) also studied directing and dramaturgy at the Theatre Institute in Barcelona and literary theory and comparative literature at the University of Barcelona. In his work, he deals with ethical problems in the representation of political processes, the practice of discourse and the relationships between knowledge and power.
